Goldenstein’s Work in the Field Of Theatre

The painter Franz Kurz zu Thurn und Goldenstein (1807–1878) worked in Ljubljana between 1834 and 1867. He established himself as a church painter and as a creator of stage scenery for the Estates Theatre, the theatre of Mahr’s Commercial School, and the theatre of the Aloysianum. Goldenstein’s stage designs have not survived. Some are known through sketches preserved in the Joanneum Museum in Graz (Neue Galerie Graz – Universalmuseum Joanneum). This paper examines Goldenstein’s stage designs and other theatrical works based on newspaper reports about individual performances. Goldenstein also designed several so-called “living pictures” (tableaux vivants), the best known being the four tableaux vivants presented at the “Prešeren Evening” on 2 December 1865 at the Estates Theatre in Ljubljana. In 1867 he moved to Graz, where in 1877 he created a theatre curtain for a private theatre in Bela Crkva (Temesvar).
